The state of the Baltic Sea and our climate are closely connected. Many of the operations that release greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere to increase global warming also contribute to the eutrophication of the sea. At the same time, climate change is expected to speed up eutrophication of the Baltic Sea as we will experience heavier rainfalls and milder winters, and this will lead to an increased nutrient runoff into the sea. A warmer climate also means a higher water temperature, which supports algae growth.
Luckily many of the climate actions we can take aren’t just good for the climate, but also for our beloved sea. Our personal actions have a massive impact both when it comes to keeping our planet cool and our seas clean. At Spark, we believe there are many synergies between climate initiatives and Baltic Sea initiatives, and we are therefore very excited to take part in this discussion. If you are in Pori next Wednesday, make sure to stop by!
